It is high time that KCS seek to promote further innovation in the realms of clearance and logistics while operating UNI-PASS. To this end, we need to find the way to readily adapt to the rapidly changing trade landscape, emergence of digital logistics rising from digital transition of tradeㆍlogistics stake holders and a shift in the trade paradigm from B2B to B2C and C2C.
Korea Customs is unlocking smart innovation, harnessing new digital technologies, accumulated big data on trade and logistics in the whole customs area while managing UNI-PASS clearance and logistics procedures in an uninterrupted manner.
Last year, Korea Customs expanded the scope of our work beyond secured and seamless maintenance of data and resources through UNI-PASS. For instance, we have started to adopt generative AI and Chat GPT into customs adminstration, boost data economy through business MyData, manage big data-enabled supply chain and digital transformation, greatly contributing to the Korean government main policy, ‘Digital Platform Government’.
In 2024, Korea Customs will put priority on stable operation of UNI-PASS, which is the core infrastructure of the national trade.
Further, we have a plan to apply emerging technologies and AI technologies into various areas including drug seizures, receipt of complaints to improve productivity, mobile robots to inspect cargo, equipment to detect high-risk passengers.
What is more, we will find the common grounds between people and customs officers to boost field-oriented smart innovation and create new agendas while promoting data openness policy represented by open API, company MyData platform and right to data portability. We will also carry out ‘Customs Adminstration Digital Innovative Strategy’ to automate simple and repetitive tasks and realize digital logistics.
Korea Customs is striving to advance ‘Digital Transition’ in all areas of customs administration to support ‘Digital Platform Government’; 1) Manage trade data·statistics and UNI-PASS, critical infrastructure of trade and logistics, 2) Promote digital transformation and smart innovation on customs’s core tasks, 3) Develop field-oriented technologies combined with new digital technologies.
※ UNI-PASS: KCS e-clearance system, enabling import/export declarations, checking requirements and tariff payment without requiring service users to pay visits. This e-clearance system has been supplied to 15 countries starting from the Dominican Republic in 2008.
